Understanding Business Processes and Data Simultaneously
One of the key activities undertaken by business analysts is the
gathering of requirements to understand the business needs that
will drive a particular project or initiative. This should always
involve documenting or 'modeling' the different aspects or 'views'
of the organisation or department involved to provide a holistic
view of the organisation's needs.
However it is often the case that business analysis
professionals instinctively model requirements from only one
perspective - the business. 'Data' is often considered to be the
sole responsibility of IT.
In this paper, Joan Pournara discusses the reasons why business
analysts must ensure they form a multi-dimensional view of any
organisation and also provides some useful techniques for achieving
this.
