In 2009 Orbus Software was named as a "Cool Vendor" in the "Cool
Vendors in Enterprise Architecture 2009" report by Greta James,
Gartner. Orbus was chosen because it was found to be
innovative, impactful and
intriguing.
In both 2010 and 2011 Gartner approached Orbus Software
requesting that they participate in the Magic Quadrant for
Enterprise Architecture Tools. On both occasions Orbus
declined.
In 2010 Orbus declined because it had severe reservations about
Gartner's view of the EA Landscape, and how this was reflected in
the evaluation criteria they used to form the basis of their
research for the MQ. Gartner were very keen that Orbus engage but
eventually it was agreed that we would not be included in the MQ in
2010. As part of these discussions Orbus indicated a desire to
participate in the 2011 MQ, given that Gartner intended to make
important changes to their evaluation criteria in order to indicate
a level playing field for all EA Tool Vendors.
Orbus and Gartner agreed on issuing the following joint
statement:
"Orbus indicated for strategic reasons that they did not wish to
participate in the 2010 MQ whilst Gartner made changes to their
methodology. As a result, Gartner were unable to obtain the
up-to-date information that they had received from the other
members of the MQ 2010 and thus unable to make a like-for like
comparison. In view of this, Gartner decided not to include Orbus
in the Gartner MQ 2010. Orbus have now confirmed that they wish to
participate in the Gartner MQ in 2011."
In 2011, Chris Wilson of Gartner again invited Orbus to
participate in the MQ for EA Tools, indicating, in his words, that
Orbus are 'one of the key players in this arena'.
Orbus reluctantly declined Gartner's invitation to promote their
market-leading product within the Magic Quadrant Report. This was
because Orbus were unwilling to reveal any sensitive information
regarding their current business model and future product
strategy.
Gartner confirmed that withholding such information would impact
negatively on any score or rating applied.
Taking this into account, Orbus felt any evaluation would be
unbalanced and misleading to Gartner's clients and indeed to any
purchasers of the MQ report.
As a result, Gartner did not include Orbus Software in the MQ
for EA Tools 2011.
