iServer 2017 - How to use iServer Explorer?

iServer Explorer is NOT designed for creating new objects.

Steps to follow:

  1. Open/create a Visio document in iServer.
  2. Under the iServer ribbon, click on the “iServer Explorer” icon.
  • The panel might open on the right hand side, at the top or at the bottom of the document. Sometimes, this can be retracted, in which case it may not be noticeable, as in the screenshot below (please note the 2 dots in the orange circle). In order to open it, please hover your cursor over the two dots until you can drag the line towards the interior of the document and expand the iServer Explorer menu.

  • Sent to Visio: Any objects that were selected and sent to the 'Visio clipboard' from the iServer Repository, using the Send to Visio option, will be available in the shape explorer here. Right-clicking on any objects in the repository and selecting Send to Visio will add the object to the iServer Explorer clipboard. Alternatively, you can select the objects and select the Send to Visio option in the "Items" ribbon.
  • Related Items: shows a list of all items related to a selected object within the same library.
  • Unused Relationships: This function will display a list of relationships existing between objects in the diagram that are not used on the diagram.
  • Used Objects: This will provide a list of objects that have been used on the current diagram. This list can be easily exported to Microsoft Excel using the "Export to Excel" option.
  • Used Relationships: Provides a list of all the relationships that are present on the current document. Double clicking on object types in the main window of the iServer Explorer allows users to view all objects of that type in the library. Double clicking the relationship type in the main window will display a list of all relationships for the objects on the diagram created using the selected relationship type. These are filtered to only show those object and relationship types available within the current template. After selecting the object type, the user can search for the object to reuse using keywords in the search box on the top right of the iServer Explorer panel. Before re-using an object, you may wish to verify further details such as its Properties, Relationships or the diagrams it appears in. Each of these options can be found in the right-click menu as well as the Properties option in the iServer Explorer toolbar.
  1. Within the Properties panel of the objects, you can also view where else an object has been used in the repository by using the Where used option. When the relevant object has been located it can be re-used in the following ways:
  • Drag it onto the location on the diagram where it is required.
  • Double-click on the item in the list.
  • Right-click and select Reuse, at which point the shape will be dropped onto the center of the open Visio diagram. You can select multiple items for re-use if appropriate.
  • Selecting an existing object on the diagram of the same type, and then selecting an object in the shape explorer, will allow users to Replace objects on the diagram with those found in the shape explorer by using the Replace option on the top right.
  1. If a relationship exists in the repository between two objects on the diagram, but is not created in the diagram, the relationship can be viewed via the Unused Relationships option, and be reused. By selecting the relationship to be reused and then selecting the Connect function in the right click menu, or from the iServer Explorer header, the relationship will be reused on the diagram. Relationships can also be created simply by dragging the relationship type from the iServer Explorer panel onto the modelling canvas
