About the Course
The course is perfect for professionals who require a deeper understanding of the planning, protection, and optimization of IT services. Learners are asked to consider how best to design new and updated services, service systems, tools and technology architectures, as well as how to use key metrics.
The course is fully accredited by PeopleCert, an examination institute for its ITIL certification training portfolio. Learners completing the certification exam will be awarded 4 credit units. These can go towards the 22 credits required to gain the ITIL Expert qualification.
Course Outline
Module 1: Introduction to Planning, Protection and Optimization
This module introduces the PPO lifecycle stages and their core concepts and terminology.
Module 2: Capacity Management
This module focuses on the Service Design phase. It covers the process of Capacity Management and how it contributes to PPO practices.
Capacity Management is explored in detail, along with its impact on generating business value. Its policies, principles, and activities are examined within the context of PPO practices. The module also reviews Capacity Management metrics.
Module 3: Availability Management
This module focuses on Availability Management and how it contributes to business value. Key activities, methods, and techniques are also examined in relation to PPO practices.
Module 4: IT Service Continuity Management
This module examines the concepts and principles of IT Service Continuity Management (ITSCM) and its contribution to business value.
ITSCM policies, principles, and activities are examined within the context of PPO practices in each of the four ITSCM lifecycle phases. The module also reviews IT Service Capacity Management metrics.
Module 5: Information Security Management
This module focuses on Information Security Management and how it contributes to business value.
Information Security Management policies, principles and activities are examined within the context of PPO practices. The module also reviews Information Security Management metrics.
Module 6: Demand Management
This module focuses on the basic concepts and principles of Demand Management. It explores the triggers, inputs, and outputs of the Demand Management process.
Demand Management and business activity patterns are described. Demand Management policies, principles, and activities are examined within the context of PPO practices.
The module also explores the concept of managing demand for a service and how it interfaces with service design.
Module 7: PPO Roles and Responsibilities
This module explores the key roles and functions of a number of generic roles within PPO:
- Process Manager
- Process Practitioner
- Capacity Management Process Manager
- Availability Management Process Manager
- Service Continuity Process Manager
- Information Security Management Process Manager
Module 8: Technology and Implementation Considerations
This module outlines the technology that is required for Service Design. It also covers how to evaluate technology and practices for process implementation.
The challenges and risks involved in implementing practices and processes are discussed, along with the Critical Success Factors. The module also explores the technology considerations for planning, protection, and optimization practice.
Module 9: Exam Preparation
This module supports learners preparing for the ITIL Planning, Protection and Optimization exam.
Assessment
The course includes an exam voucher for the ITIL Planning, Protection and Optimization (PPO) examination. This can be taken virtually online using a service provided by PeopleCert.

- Pass mark is 70% or 28/40
