A Business Rules Engine (or BRE) is a set of applications and technology systems that executes one or more business rules as part of process execution. A business rules engine is commonly provided as a component of a BPMS or as an add-on component to a BPMS that provides the ability to define and manage business rules, including verifying their consistency of rules and the relationships between different rules. Some of these rules relate to IT applications that are affected or need to enforce one or more of the rules.
