What is a Value Stream?

what-is-a-value-stream

A value stream is a concept found in the Lean management philosophy. It is simply a sequence of steps required to produce value for the final consumer of a service or product. You can think of it as a distinct path along which information and resources flow. What you need to remember is that every step of this process is meant to add value to the end product. Here is a simple example of what a possible value stream might look like for brewing a cup of tea: boil the water, place a tea bag inside a cup, pour the boiling water inside the cup, then leave it for a minute to brew.

Easy right? Well, that’s exactly the point. The reason a value stream is so helpful is because it’s a high-level, linear and relatively simple process. As such, it’s a great tool for documenting, analyzing and improving present and future states.
