The Business Model Canvas is a graphical template mainly used to document and develop business plans. The model is straightforward, comprising of nine areas that users need to fill in when building their canvas. These are: Key Partners, key activities, key resources, value proposition, customer relationships, channels, customer segments, cost structure and revenue streams.

The model is a fantastic conceptual tool. Its structure, with the nine distinct areas of interest, encourages users to pay attention to the business’ full scope; whereas the actual layout stimulates solution thinking to integrate the pieces more closely and also brings clarity to the overall vision.

The canvas is simple, yet versatile and dependable. In daily practice, it is frequently used in conjunction with other tools such as SWOT and Porter’s Five Forces. As such, business architects, analysts and entrepreneurs use it for anything from strategic alignment initiatives and assessing investment needs, to creating blueprints for their strategy and even understanding competitors.

To sum up, the business model canvas is a valuable planning tool that provides an overview of the business’ offering, infrastructure, market and finances, all in a single page. This emphasizes focus and agility, and ensures the business plan revolves around the value proposition.
