The Challenge

Our client is the distribution arm and a subsidiary of the manufacturing company, with operations in thirteen countries throughout Europe, each of which runs with a significant degree of autonomy. This had led to a vast number of divergent processes and tools, whereby the only commonality throughout the enterprise was the network infrastructure. Any and all higher layers of information systems, such as application and business, differed from country to country. The company had no way of rationalizing their systems or improving efficiency. This was the point at which they collaborated with Altran. The manufacturing company needed was a vision and roadmap that could also help them make cost savings throughout the enterprise. Altran’s strategy was threefold:

These elements are all intrinsically linked together and required an overarching holistic approach. Simplifying the information systems, providing a unified interface and standardizing the toolset would all help streamline the user experience and make operational aspect more straightforward.

The software being used at the time was a mishmash of products: some had been developed in-house, some were being provided by the parent company, and some programs were being onboarded on a case by case basis. The first phase of the project was simply to establish the current landscape, and understand the performance / effectiveness of current processes.

The Result

This required investment into an enterprise architecture tool, something which they had no prior experience of using. Indeed, in some ways the architecture team were starting from scratch as there was no central repository or current data mapping at this time. iServer was an attractive proposition from the outset, as its Microsoft integration and interface meant that adoption would be quick and the learning curve short. Non-technical stakeholders could make sense of simple graphical analysis and the importing data from Excel, MS Project and SharePoint. Similarly based on collected data from Excel sheets it is possible to create automated drawings.

Using iServer to model landscapes and links between business processes and information systems facilitated impact analysis and provided insight into the various interdependencies. This provided visibility over the enterprise and enabled the team to develop a complete roadmap, fully aware of the implications of each business decision.
