IT4IT Reference Architecture Pack
IT4IT
May 19, 2016

IT4IT® is a vendor-neutral reference architecture from The Open Group for managing the business of IT. It was created to address a long-standing gap: while many mature industries and management functions (like finance, supply chain, and HR) have well-established reference architectures, IT historically didn’t.
IT4IT takes a value chain approach to model what IT actually does – helping teams pinpoint the activities that truly contribute to business competitiveness. This model is known as the IT Value Chain, and at its core sits the IT4IT Reference Architecture: a three-level functional reference architecture that connects and underpins four end-to-end value streams:
- Strategy to Portfolio (S2P)
- Requirement to Deploy (R2D)
- Request to Fulfill (R2F)
- Detect to Correct (D2C)

What’s included the IT4IT Reference Architecture Starter Pack?
If you’re new to IT4IT – or want a faster way to start applying it – this pack gives you practical, ready-to-use assets, including:
- Visio template diagrams and models: Start mapping IT4IT in your own environment with editable diagrams you can tailor to your tools, teams, and processes – ideal for workshops, architecture documentation, and operating model design.
- IT4IT Definitions & Symbols Guide: A quick reference to the notation used across IT4IT diagrams – covering functional components and the information model (including key data objects and service model data objects). Use it to read, interpret, and create IT4IT-aligned views consistently.
- Reference cards for each value stream: Four at-a-glance cards that summarize the purpose, value drivers, and key elements of each IT4IT value stream
- Level 1 & 2 Posters: A visual overview of the IT4IT value streams and how they connect across the IT Value Chain – useful as a shared “map” for stakeholders and as a starting point for deeper modeling.
Everything is designed to help you get up and running quickly as you begin implementing this widely adopted Open Group standard in your organization.
